Political instability in Balzi – Prime Minister's statement
The Royal Government of Curimae expresses alarm over the destabilization plots against Balzian President Carl Miguel S. Victa. The Royal Government also suspects that voluminous academic work could be contributing to stress, which in turn fuels the destabilization plot. The plot is unprecedented, given that Balzi is the most developed democratic Philippine micronation and the only true democracy in the Philippine Micronations Community. The Royal Government of Curimae recognizes Carl Miguel S. Victa as the legitimate President of the Republic of Balzi.
In state politics, a democracy is a country where citizens choose leaders according to their beliefs about how they should govern themselves. A democratic government offers several crucial advantages.
- Defense of basic rights, including education, expression, optimal health, food security, self-defense, religion, and work. This means that citizens can act as they desire without fear of oppression.
- Fair and just representation, which contributes to inclusive laws that accurately match the dynamic demands of the citizens. This also sharply reduces the risks of extremism and terrorism, as less privileged sectors have a voice in the legislative branch. Through voting, the public can decide which candidates should rule their constituencies. This ensures that the leadership is as close to the subjects as possible. Voting also promotes patriotism.
- A democratic government is transparent by design. This means that people can look into how their government acts or utilizes resources. This contributes to accountability, which in turn ensures that the actions of the ruling parties match their promises.
- Also through voting, the transfer of power is generally smoother. When there is an incoming leader, the outgoing leader communicates with their successor and the outgoing government gradually transfers powers and responsibilities to the incoming government.
- Limited liability is another crucial advantage of democracies: no single position, not even the head of state or head of government, has unlimited power. In other words, power is disperse across multiple government positions. Limited liability benefits human health because it gives the politician more time for what is most appropriate for their prescribed powers. When a politician becomes incapacitated, a more able-bodied successor can be appointed by a commission or voted by constituents.
- People can decide which laws to propose or which laws to repeal. Through referenda, they can also be asked to vote on certain kinds of legislation, usually including constitutions or legislation about their localities. This promotes a degree of direct democracy.
Just as “no government is perfect,” democratic countries have limitations too. Top one disadvantage is that they require many citizens who are willing to participate in state politics.
In the macronational sector, the democracy is considered a gold standard in judging the world’s countries. It is said that the more democratic, the better. There is even what is called a Democracy Index, which judges all countries based on how the degree of respect their governments pay to basic freedoms. Citizens of democratic countries generally avoid non-democratic countries unless they are sure that visiting certain countries with authoritarian governments has clear economic and financial benefits. Meanwhile, most micronations are authoritarian, oligarchic, monarchical, or even totalitarian because they have very few participating citizens. Likewise, most Philippine micronations are authoritarian in the way that their heads of state or heads of government de facto rule by decree. This observation contradicts the fact that the Philippines it itself a democratic macronation with a stringent electoral culture that denounces cheaters on sight.
The Republic of Balzi is the only genuine democratic Philippine micronation. In fact, sometimes around October and November 2024, Balzi conductes the largest election of any Southeast Asian micronation. Meanwhile, Curimae is intended to be a democratic micronation, but currently functions as an authoritarian-style micronation because it has few participationg citizens.
To people who are in any democratic micronations, if they have disagreements with their leaders, they just conduct protests or call for elections instead of resorting to overthrowing their incumbent governments. To be honest, citizens of democratic micronations are quite lucky to have a government that respects basic freedoms and ensures smooth transfers of power. Democracies are very rare in the micronations sector, so any democratic micronation should be valued like jewelry.
Meanwhile, for self-described authoritarian micronations to maintain their grip on power, they can devise effective methods such as legalizing and regulating entertainment, hedonism, and all forms of mutually consented sexual activity. A prominent example can be seen in the novel Brave New World, where the authoritarian government there promotes entertainment and sexual hedonism to ensure that citizens do not stage rebellions. Depriving people of hedonistic sources forces them to speak up on social issues because they will be exposed to life’s most painful moments.
